BEREA, Ohio – A 16-year-old girl’s arm was broken in two places during a fight on Nov. 9 at Coe Lake Park on South Rocky River Drive.

A Middleburg Heights woman called police around 6 p.m. that day to report the fight. She said her son, 12, and niece, 16, were playing in the park when the trouble started.

The woman, who did not witness the incident but was told what happened next, said six or seven children pushed her son and niece to the ground.

This was after the woman’s son and niece approached the group of children and asked why they were staring at them. The son thought they were staring at him because of the clothes he was wearing.

One of the children in the other group, a 14-year-old boy, told police he was in the park with a girl aged 14 and another boy aged 12. When the woman’s son approached and asked why they were staring at him , the older boy and his friends told him they weren’t staring at him.

The 14-year-old boy said the woman’s son kicked the 14-year-old girl in the leg. Everyone started pushing and shoving each other. It is unclear whether any punches were thrown.

The woman’s niece required surgery to repair her broken arm. Her family wasn’t sure if her insurance would cover the surgery.
